Acne is one of the most commonly diagnosed skin diseases. There are many different types of acne, of which the two most commonly diagnosed types are acne vulgaris and rosacea. Acne is mainly inflammatory, very often complicated by infection. Polyphenolic compounds, have found a special place in studies on their use in the treatment of acne due to their significant diversity and high biological activity. A particularly large number of studies have been conducted in the last 5 years, which have shown the high effectiveness of many polyphenolic compounds in eliminating the bacteria responsible for the development and progression of acne lesions, also taking into account antibiotic-resistant strains. These are mainly in vitro studies, and among the tested polyphenolic compounds, are quercetin, and resveratrol. Resveratrol in particular due to its potent antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral, antisebaceous and anti-inflammatory effects. Resveratrol appears to be one of the most promising natural agents against acne. However, it is important to note that there are many other phenolic compounds such as indicaxanthine, taurine, and curcumin that also demonstrate efficacy in combating acne. Plant polyphenols can reduce inflammation by reducing the production of cytokines IL-1, IL-6 and IL-8, hyperkeratinization and sebum release. Finally, they reduce ROS production, which is an important factor in limiting the development of acne lesions.
